(Second Activity)

First Activity (28th June - 04th July, 2010)

Quantum Condensed Matter Systems

Condensed Matter Physics is field which emerged out of solid state physics. The term was coined in 1967 when the name of solid state physics group at Cavendish Laboratory was changed at Cambridge University. Today by some estimates one third physicists in USA classify themselves as condense matter physicists. For the first activity of the summer college topic chosen is "Quantum Condensed Matter Systems" which will deal with microscopic and macroscopic properties of system exhibiting quantum mechanical effects. During the activity areas such as crystalline and non-crystalline solids, soft condensed matter, phases and interfaces will be covered.

Second Activity (05th July - 10th July, 2010)

Scientific Computing and Mathematical Modeling

The scientific computing and mathematical modeling is an important emerging area. In last twenty years there has been a phenomenal growth in the field. Today it is said that there are three pillars of science namely: theory, experiment and computing. There are number of areas where scientific computing is the most essential tool. Some of these areas of science where one cannot progress without scientific computing are: molecular science, weather and climate forecasting, earth science, astrophysics and astronomy, particle physics, and life science. The development of sophisticated and detailed algorithms pushing the demand for CPU power from teraflops to petaflops. This requires new level of understanding in the field of high performance computing. This activity will cover areas of science where computing is a must and some activities already exist in Pakistan.

Working Language
Participants must have an adequate knowledge of English which is the working language of the college.

Venue

These Colleges have traditionally been held at the scenic summer resorts of Nathiagali, near Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Lodged in Sylvan slopes of lower Himalayan range, these hill resorts (2000-3000 meter high) are sheer slopes of colorful harmony, rolling fields and towering forested hills, pervading senses with a deep feeling of rediscovering nature, and providing an excellent blend of tranquil atmosphere conducive to learning and enjoying nature at its best.

Funding and Sponsorship

The Boarding and lodging arrangements and the expenses are in general, the responsibility of the Organizers. The travel costs are expected to be arranged by the participants. However, modest funds may be available to cover the expenses, either in full or in part, of some participants from the developing countries.

Registration

Request for participation, on the prescribed form (e-mail or photocopy) should reach the Executive Secretary by 31st March, 2010. The selected candidates will be informed by 25th April 2010. Final selection, however, is subject to receipt of the formal application.
