The
National Centre for Physics is holding a 3-week workshop on
computational seismology from 28 January to 15 February 2008.
The workshop is designed for MSc/ MPhil degree holders, MPhil
students and MSc students in their final semester, in the field
of Earth Sciences, or Physics, or Mathematics. The main
focus of the workshop is on the basics theory of production,
propagation and detection of seismic waves, programming in
FORTRAN 90, as well as symbolic computing with applications in
seismology. The topics to be covered are, one dimensional wave
equation, three dimensional seismic wave equation, solutions of
wave equations, reflection and refraction, ray optics in
variable density medium, and normal modes of the earth, basic
seismometry and instrumentation. In addition there will be
lectures on, Basic theory of Seismology and Plate Tectonics,
Issues related to Hydrogeology due to Occurrence of Earthquakes,
Seismic Tectonics, Seismic Hazard Assessment, Faulting and
Earthquake deformation and related topics. Interested candidates
may register online. Selected candidates from outside Islamabad
will be provided travel and lodging support.
